Overview[]

Gurranq is a hulking, bestial clergyman who resides in the Bestial Sanctum in north-eastern Caelid. Long ago, his terrifying ferocity earned him the name "Death of the Demigods.[1] Presently, he seeks Deathroot, a product of the Rune of Death which spread through the Lands Between following the murder of Godwyn the Golden on the Night of Black Knives.[2] Gurranq consumes Deathroot, although it does not appear to sate him.[3]

Gurranq was assisted in his eradication of the Deathroot by D, Hunter of the Dead, a hunter of Those Who Live in Death.[4] However, D passes this duty onto a Tarnished after noticing their prowess for weeding Deathroot.[5] The Tarnished brings the Deathroot they find throughout the world to Gurranq, and is given access to bestial incantations in exchange.[6] Once they have fed Gurranq all the Deathroot they can find, Gurranq leaves the sanctum. Although still not sated, he realises that he can do no more, and that his appetite will be his sole companion.[7]

When the Tarnished travels to Crumbling Farum Azula to claim the Rune of Death, they encounter Gurranq once more. If the Tarnished had given Gurraq all the Deathroots, he is saddened by his friend's betrayal, but nonetheless attacks the Tarnished to protect the Rune of Death from them. Gurraq is overwhelmed, forcing him to use the Rune of Death to empower himself and reveal his true form as Maliketh, the Black Blade,[8] shadowbound beast of Queen Marika the Eternal.[9] The Tarnished defeats Maliketh, and unleashes the Rune of Death.

Questline Progression[]

  1. (Optional) Speak to D, Hunter of the Dead, after obtaining a Deathroot and he will advise you to visit Gurranq. This can either be done at the start of D's questline in Limgrave, or in Roundtable Hold.
  2. Travel to the Bestial Sanctum at the north-eastern point of Caelid. The sending gate marked on your map by D if you showed him a Deathroot will lead you straight there. Speak to Gurranq. If you have at least one Deathroot, Gurranq will give you a Clawmark Seal and Beast Eye. The Beast Eye will notify you whenever you are close to another Deathroot.
  3. Hand over each Deathroot you find to Gurranq in exchange for rewards. After you have given him four Deathroot, reload the area and Gurranq will attack you. After depleting 30% of Gurranq's health, he will be subdued- speak to him and reload the area so that he returns to his original position.
  4. After giving him the ninth Deathroot, he will give you an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone before disappearing.
  5. Gurranq will reappear at the end of Crumbling Farum Azula, under the name Beast Clergyman. After reducing his health to 50% he will enter phase 2, under the name Maliketh, the Black Blade.
    • Maliketh can be fought before completing Gurranq's questline. Doing so will not affect the questline, and Gurranq will remain in the Bestail Sanctum even after Maliketh has been defeated. Likewise, killing Gurranq in the Bestial Sanctum will not affect the fight against Maliketh.
    • Maliketh will have unique dialogue if you complete Gurranq's questline before fighting him in Crumbling Farum Azula.

Notes[]

  • The weapon Gurranq uses is a Cinquedea.
  • Gurranq can occasionally be found outside the Bestial Sanctum at night, howling in the direction of the Erdtree.
