Blood Moon Fishing: Rare Drops and Tips (2024)

Blood Moon

The Blood Moon in Terraria is a unique event where the moon turns a deep blood red, and mob spawn rates skyrocket. Along with the usual chaos, this event brings out some exclusive monsters you won’t encounter otherwise. Interestingly, some of these rare creatures are tied to water—fish or fish-like monsters. But there’s a twist: you’ll need to cast your fishing line to reel them in.

Setup

Fishing during the Blood Moon isn’t exactly a walk in the park with all the monsters constantly attacking. That’s why I recommend having at least a minimal setup to keep yourself safe and focused.

For my base, I like to set up a small hut right next to the water. The design I use (shown in the picture below) is super practical—it makes it tougher for most mobs to get inside. Best of all, it’s simple and doesn’t even need walls. The only thing I recommend having is a chest. You never know when you’ll need to free up inventory space for more fish or some awesome loot.

Next, you’ll want to set up a solid defense system. Personally, I rely on the Lunar Portal Staff to summon a sentry, but keep in mind this can only be obtained by defeating the Moon Lord. For a beginner-friendly alternative, the Houndius Shootius is a great pre-Hardmode sentry, obtainable by defeating the Deerclops.

In addition to sentries, I like to use minions. My go-to is the White Tiger, summoned with the Desert Tiger Staff. However, this staff is locked behind the Desert Chest in the Dungeon and only accessible in Hardmode. For a pre-Hardmode option, the Flinx Staff is your best bet. It’s easy to craft using Flinx Fur and Gold or Platinum Bars.

Equipment

In addition to having a secure area, using the Chum Caster fishing rod will significantly increase your chances of catching these creatures, boosting the odds from 1/6 to 1/3. However, the rod is only obtainable through the Wandering Eye Fish or the Zombie Merman. To further improve your chances, throwing Chum Buckets into the water will also increase the likelihood of a fish hooking onto your line.

Exclusive Fish

Now that you’ve got your base and defense system in place, it’s time to focus on catching these rare Blood Moon fish.

The Wandering Eye Fish

Blood Moon Fishing: Rare Drops and Tips (2)

This pre-Hardmode fish looks like a demon eye crossed with a flying fish. It’s a low-level enemy with very little health, maxing out at just 300 in Classic mode. Despite its weakness, it can drop some valuable items. There’s a 4% chance it will drop a Bloody Tear and a 6.67% chance of getting a Money Trough. You might also snag a Blood Rain Bow or a Chum Caster fishing rod, each with a 12.5% chance. Additionally, it has a 50% chance to drop Chum Buckets, making it worth reeling in during the Blood Moon.

The Zombie Merman

Similar to the Wandering Eye Fish, the Zombie Merman is a pre-Hardmode enemy with low health, maxing out at 400 in Classic mode. It shares the same drop pool, making it another potential source for the same valuable items.

The Hemogoblin Shark

This Hardmode shark is lightning-fast and packs a punch, with a considerable health pool maxing out at 5000 and 30 defense in Classic mode. While it’s tough, it can be rewarding to defeat. There’s a 4% chance it will drop a Bloody Tear and a 50% chance to reward you with 7 to 10 Chum Buckets. On top of that, it has a 12.5% chance to drop either the Haemorrhaxe or the Blood Thorn, making it a worthwhile challenge during the Blood Moon.

The Blood Eel

Blood Moon Fishing: Rare Drops and Tips (5)

The Blood Eel is a flying, multi-segmented enemy, meaning the damage dealt by its tail differs from the damage inflicted by its head or body. Similar to the Hemogoblin Shark, it’s incredibly fast and has a high health pool, maxing out at 6,000 in Classic mode. However, with zero defense, it’s a bit easier to take down.

Defeating the Blood Eel offers a 4% chance for a Bloody Tear and a 50% chance to drop 7 to 10 Chum Buckets. Additionally, it has a 12.5% chance to drop either the Haemorrhaxe or the Drippler Crippler, making it another valuable target during the Blood Moon.

The Dreadnautilus

This mollusk is widely regarded as one of the toughest enemies in the Blood Moon event, often considered a mini-boss. With a maximum health of 7,000 and 24 defense in Classic mode, it’s not easy to take down. However, it’s also a highly rewarding opponent. There’s a 50% chance it will drop a Bloody Tear, as well as a 50% chance to drop either the Sanguine Staff or 7 to 10 Chum Buckets. On top of that, it has an 11.11% chance to drop the Blood Moon Monolith, which gives its surrounding area the eerie ambiance of a Blood Moon.

Town Slime

Town Slimes serve as quirky town pets, offering no combat benefits but reducing enemy spawn rates. There are 8 different types of slimes, all being obtained in different ways, the Surly Slime is only obtainable by fishing during the Blood Moon. Like other monsters, it will leap out of the water when reeled in.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while fishing during the Blood Moon can be intimidating, especially for beginners, it can be a highly rewarding experience with the right equipment and preparation.
